Most newels are three to three and a half feet in height. A third scenario is installing newel posts with winder treads but this is a little more complicated so i will address this in a future post. The two most common scenarios are floor level posts and posts at the start of a stair. The handrail height determines what height your newel post will be.

The newel base makes up the remainder of the height of the newel post. Mounting the post through the floor is by far the strongest most durable and probably the best method but the difficulty is such that it is rarely if ever required. Designs for newel posts are governed by the international residential code irc which says handrail heights must be between 34 and 38 inches. A newel post is always a fixed length usually 750mm 850mm long excluding the peg.

So my personal favorite is the hanger bolt. Pegged newel posts are ideal if you can t easily remove the existing newel base from your staircase but want to update the look of your newel. Calculating the newel post height is the first step in newel post installation. The vertical post supporting a handrail at the foot of a staircase is referred to as a newel these posts can also be used as intermediate support on a stair landing and at the top of the staircase.
